After a long winter spent at home, the arrival of warmer weather coinciding with the lifting of restrictions means that getting outdoors to celebrate is high on everyone’s minds.
Whether you’re planning a fun family outing in nature or a romantic rug date for two at your local park, we’ve got all you need to prepare for the ultimate day out in the sun.
A good picnic rug is an investment that will see you through for years to come, though if yours is looking a bit daggy and dated (stuffed somewhere in the boot of your car) then now might be a good time for a fresh new update. Look for a generous sized rug with waterproof backing and perhaps its own carry-handles.
When it comes to looking the part and feeling super organised, you can do a whole lot better than a couple of supermarket cooler bags – trust us. Instead, invest in a chic and practical picnic basket to help haul your goodies around in style. From old-school wicker to modern prints, you’re sure to find a style you love.
Knowing what to pack in that fab new picnic basket really depends on how much of a die-hard gourmand you are. At the very least you’ll need plates, cutlery, napkins and some (unbreakable) glassware for drinks. A mini chopping board and bread knife won’t go astray, nor will a bottle opener.
If you really want to make the most of it, think about ways to add comfort and convenience, so that you can settle in for the day. This might mean bringing along a few cushions and a lightweight blanket (for that post-lunch snooze), packing a thermos for hot tea or coffee and an Esky for your cool drinks. Be sure to pack sunscreen hats, wet wipes, paper towel (for spills), mozzie spray, warm layers and some empty plastic bags for rubbish disposal. Keep it fun by bringing along a frisbee, soccer ball or portable badminton set.
Consider starting with an antipasto spread (think dips, salumi, olives, cheese, nuts, crackers and good bread). Fritatta, quiche and savoury tarts always make a perfect outdoor lunch option, especially served with salads. Perhaps pick up some ready-made salads, a barbecue chicken and some fresh bread or rolls and let everyone help themselves to freshly made chicken-salad sandwiches. To finish, you can’t go past a shareable cheese platter and loads of fresh berries (which are in season right now).
